Discourse Idea

I don’t know if my thoughts about my discourse is a good idea, and I would like for my fellow peer’s to give me their thoughts. I have decided to do my discourse on Motherhood, I am not sure if I will narrow it down to Single motherhood, but motherhood non the less, I want to center my discourse on Langston Hughes poem “A Dream Deferred” for those who have never read the poem here it is, after reading it you will see where I want to go with my discourse. Please comment.

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up

Like a raisin in the sun?

Or fester like a sore

And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?

Or crust and sugur over—

Like syrup sweet?

Maybe it just sags

Like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

I have choosen to do my discourse on Motherhood, I have not yet decided if I am going to narrow it down to Single motherhood. In my discourse I will try to demonstrate the affects that motherhood has on one’s life. I will use books that discuse choosing motherhood. I will also look at texts that focus around Pregnancy and dating. If I choose to narrow it down I will focus on texts, articles and journals that show challenges and the positive aspects of Single motherhood. Although I will use books, I would like to have my primary source be Langston Hughes Poem “A Dream Deferred.” This topic relates to me as a new mother and as a single mother, I can reflect on the dream deferred, the dispointment from other’s, the the choice, the acceptance, the waiting, the pain, the exitement, weight on my shoulder, but utimaley the joy.

There once was a women and man who wanted to have a child that it consumed all their thoughts, the husband was a great businessman and the wife a home maker so they couldn’t figure out with all their fortune why they couldn’t have a child. The husband and wife lived next to a beautiful garden that had flowers and rosemary. One day the woman was on her way to the market and as walked she passed the garden which belonged to a mysterious enchantress. As she gazed at the lilies and smelled the roses she noticed the rampion-rapuzel, just then women felt movement in her belly. It felt like the flutter of a baby.

Chorus: [singing] Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair, shining gleaming steaming flaxen waxen. Give me it down to there, hair, shoulder length or longer, here, baby, there, mamma, everywhere, daddy daddy hair! Flow it, show it, long as God can grow it, my hair!

The women ran back home to tell her husband that she was pregnant, she called her mother and all her friends and told them the news; they decide to throw her a baby shower. At the party all her friends and family attended and brought gifts, among the guest was the mysterious enchantress who owned the garden next to the man and women’s house. The women thanked the enchantress because she felt that it was her magical rapunzel that made her pregnant. The enchantress then touched the women belly and gave her gifts, she said that the baby would be special and would have luxurious and exotic hair, bronze skin and a pleasant disposition.

Nine months later the baby was born and the women named her Rapunzel after the enchantress’ rampion-rapunzel that she thought was responsible for her becoming pregnant. The women and man couldn’t be any happier that had a beautiful daughter who had a pleasant disposition and beautiful bronze skin. There was only one thing missing, Rapunzel was born with one curl that sat in the middle of her head. So the women and man waited and waited for the enchantress’ third gift of luxurious and exotic hair.

Her hair is kinky and combing is painful, but her mother must hold her and force her to submit to it. And yet, however she might search, the child will never find a reason weighty enough to justify the pain to which she must submit

On the morning of Rapunzel’s fifteenth birthday her parents ran in to her room to wish her happy birthday and give her gifts. They couldn’t get into her room for it was filled with coarse, wooly and freakishly long hair. They were so upset that they grabbed Rapunzel and stormed over to the enchantress’ cottage were yelled and mused, they told the enchantress that this was not what she promised them. The enchantress said yes it is, I promised you luxurious hair which it is long and thick and exotic hair which it is different, instead of silky and smooth it is coarse and wooly. The parents were so afraid that when their friends and family came over for Rapunzel’s party that they would make fun of her and leave laughing. The enchantress told the man and women that she needed

to leave town but she didn’t want to her garden to be ruined. So they made a deal, they would look after the garden if the enchantress would take Rapunzel and hide her. So the enchantress took Rapunzel and placed her in a tower far, far away.

The man and the women gave up there house and moved into the enchantress cottage. They moved forward with their life and had more children two sons and they never heard or mentioned Rapunzel again, but every so often the women would go sit by the rampion-rapunzel and sing and weep.

Have’n written in awhile

I haven’t written in awhile, I know that we are suppose to write at least once a week, I didn’t get a chance to attend class last week, so if anyone got has notes that are significant please e-mail them to me.

Let’s talk about the past couple of weeks text, the week of June 2, we had to read a couple of variations of the fairytale Sleeping beauty. I thought it was interesting how they took the same story and made it their own. The thing that remained consistent was that Beauty was defiantly a damsel in distress even in her self. It seems like alot of the texts that we read center around women and there value, how man defines them, which makes me question if the prof is a sexiest (LOL). But seriously the story about the egg, then Rapunzel and her hair, and now beauty. I am not sure how or why the story of Sleeping Beauty relates to menistration? Or the why to womanhood. So in conculsion the stories where entertaining and the point that was made byBettlhiem was interesting but I would like to read about men now.

The reading for this past week were very interesting, I mean who doesn’t like to read as a sperm narrates the story. although I can respect Martin’s opinion and can even understand her position I do think that she has stretched a little. It was a time when women where like the fairy tales, women didn’t get value until a man made them valuable. I think that that fairy tales do not depict that image at all, I think that fairy tales make women seem import and valuable because princes and knights are fighting to for the hand of the women, the object of there affection. Yes you find that in some fairy tales the women’s character seems to be a damsel in distress, and the man comes to rescues her, but to me the man either get’s knighted himself or made to be some king, he always gets a reward, so to me fairy tales represent women as power and that women give the man value. Why else would men go through so many lopes and hoops to gain the hand of a women, in fairy tales and in real life. I just think that martin could have made her point some other way, even dealing with the biological make up of reproduction we all all know that the egg chooses which sperm if and will fertilize it and after all is said an done the eg does all the work similar to a man and women relationship.
